Adirondack Chairs, My Search for the Perfect Fit: Polywood

We recently did a major update to our backyard and decided to upgrade our outdoor seating. I went down the rabbit hole researching Adirondack chairs. I wanted something comfortable, durable, and maintenance-free—but also something that wouldn’t start to look terrible after a couple of seasons. There are a lot of options out there, from $60 plastic chairs at big box stores to gorgeous teak models that cost more than my grill. After reading dozens of reviews and comparing different materials, styles and brands, I ultimately landed on the POLYWOOD Classic Adirondack Chair—and I’m really glad I did. We had family over this past weekend so I figured it is finally time for a review.

We also ordered the Nautical Chaise and Long Beach Bar Stools (the stools are from Costco).

🔎 Why I Chose POLYWOOD

I considered a few contenders:

  • Cedar wood: Looks great, but requires annual sealing or staining, which I know I’ll skip.
  • Teak: Beautiful and weather-resistant, but way too pricey for a full set.
  • Cheaper plastic or resin chairs: Lightweight and affordable, but multiple reviews said they warp in the sun or feel flimsy.

What really sold me on POLYWOOD—despite the higher price tag—were the consistently great reviews across Amazon, Home Depot, and outdoor living blogs. People raved about how well they held up over time, how solid they felt, and how the color didn’t fade even after years of being outside. I didn’t want to buy a cheaper set and replace it in a few years. I wanted to buy once and be done.

🛠️ Assembly

Assembly was refreshingly simple. Each chair arrived in a flat box with all hardware included, and I had it fully assembled in about 15–20 minutes. The chaise lounges too a bit longer to assemble, but the stools obviously were much easier. For the most part all the holes lined up closely enough that it didn’t impact the process, and it only took a basic allen wrench (included) and a bit of patience. I did use a socket wrench to make the process much easier and reduced the workout on my forearms. The instructions were clear enough. I found out afterwards there is a helpful video online if you prefer to follow along visually. You could easily put one together solo, though it’s faster with two people.

As you will see in some of the photos, there was some plastic edges that weren’t perfect. However, it was nothing a few quick swipes with some fine grit sandpaper couldn’t resolve.

🪑 Comfort & Design

These chairs are exactly what I was looking for—wide armrests, a gently angled back, and that classic Adirondack silhouette. The seat is low and comfortably sloped, perfect for kicking back with a drink. They’re heavy enough that they don’t blow around in the wind, but not so heavy that I can’t drag one across the patio if needed. My aunt even commented how nice the chairs feel and as we were enjoying a fire this weekend.

The bar stools are very comfortable and look great, they really go well with the deck decor. I did lay down on the chaise lounge this weekend as well and actually fell asleep. However I will admit they could be a bit more comfortable and you might consider cushions if they are something you think you use will regularly.

I also love the color selection. I went with a white that looks like wood but will never splinter or rot. The texture even feels slightly wood-like, which gives it a higher-end look compared to smooth plastic chairs.

A Nice Update to Our Backyard Project

Time will tell how well the POLYWOOD furniture will hold up (will provide updates), but based on the reviews I have read we are cautiously optimistic. I did power wash everything once due to the dust and dirt that was generated from the cutting all the pavers and even though the dirt was “caked in” a bit from rain, everything cleaned up VERY easily.

Pros
  • Extremely durable – Rain, snow, sun… doesn’t matter. These things are tanks.
  • Low maintenance – No sanding, no staining. A quick rinse with the hose and they look brand new.
  • Eco-friendly – Made from recycled plastic. Good for the planet and my peace of mind.
  • Comfortable – Wide armrests and angled seat make for a relaxing sit.
  • Warranty – Backed by a 20-year residential warranty. That’s a big deal.
  • Looks great – Stylish enough for a front porch, sturdy enough for backyard fire pits.
Cons
  • Price – It’s definitely more expensive than basic plastic or wood chairs. But you’re paying for long-term durability.
  • Heavy – About 35 lbs per chair. Not something you’ll want to move around every day.
  • Doesn’t fold – If storage space is tight, keep that in mind.

🏡 Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for any outdoor furniture that will actually last—and you’re willing to pay a bit more upfront for long-term peace of mind—POLYWOOD is the way to go. I’m thrilled with how they look on our deck and patio, and even more thrilled that I won’t be re-staining anything come next summer. They’ve elevated the whole feel of our backyard, and honestly, I kind of want to buy two more.
